The Egyptian activist Yara Sallam

This month Front Line Defenders  announced the finalist  for the  annual Human Rights Defenders at Risk award . This annual award is given to activists  who either in jail  or  facing threats because of their peaceful work and their exceptional contribution to defending the human rights in their country. the award aims to focus international attention on the  winner work. Also there  is  a cash prize of €15,000 to the winner and his NGO to support their efforts on human rights.


Front Line Defenders  have received nominations from 27 countries before  the jury announce the final five . and what was special This year is that  the Egyptian imprisoned  activist Yara salam is among the finalist Five.

Salam is a human rights defender and researcher who currently works with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) NGO. Previously She has worked as a lawyer and researcher for several Egyptian and international human rights organizations, as well as for the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). Sallam also was the winner of the African Shield Human Rights Defenders Award in 2013.

On June 21, 2014, she got arrested along with other activists who were protesting peacefully  near al-Ittihadiya Palace against the Egyptian protest  law. She tried along with 22 other demonstrators and  charged with violating the protest law .last October, a Court sentenced Yara Sallam a three years in prison, three years of probation, and a 10000  LE fine for breaching the Protest Law . later the Appeal Court reduced the sentence  to 2 years, cancelled the fine and reduced the period of police surveillance to two years.


The Jury announces the Finalists for the 2015 Front Line Defenders Award

The other four Finalists for Award are:

-Juan Carlos Flores Solís  a Mexican environmental rights campaigner,  who  recently released from prison.

– Diane Marie Rodríguez Zambrano Ecuador,an LGBTI rights activist from Ecuador  face death threats because of her work promoting the rights of the transgender community.

– Guo Feixiong a Chinese legal activist, has been repeatedly jailed and brutally tortured for challenging corruption, defending the rights of human rights defenders, minoritygroups

– Rasul Jafarov : a human rights defender in Azerbaijan, was arrested on bogus charges of “ illegal enterprise, tax evasion, and abuse of official power.

The winner of the 2015 Front Line Defenders Award will be announced later at an event in Dublin’s City Hall on 1 May.
